Columbia Highlands

Northeastern Washington is a mixture of land ownership from the Colville National Forest to state, private, tribal and BLM land. Small communities and rural ranches are sprinkled throughout the region. Local economies are historically based on resource extraction, mainly timber and mining. Ecologically speaking, northeast Washington is a "land bridge" between the Cascade and Rocky mountains, where dry and moist climates mix to create a hotspot of diversity. The region harbors many rare species of large mammals such as woodland caribou, grizzly bear, wolverine and lynx.

By working in this region, Eric Zamora hopes to learn about how community leaders from all social sectors are coming together to shape a vision of sustainability in a region where conservation interests have historically clashed with local interests. Eric also hopes to document and share the wilderness character of this mountainous landscape by taking you on a visual journey through the remote backcountry. This is an ongoing project, so expect to see more images coming soon.
