The Yellowstone to Yukon (Y2Y) conservation initiative is an effort to join already existing protected areas along the Rocky Mountains as a network to form one large corridor of wild lands with the goal of dramatically increasing the probability of survival for many rare animals.
The Y2Y initiative is well known to Eric, but it was not until 2007 that he had the chance to see the entire landscape in person. While driving with a friend from Alaska to Florida, Eric made it a point to follow the region outlined in Y2Y. This was the first opportunity he would have to not only see, but also to photograph this amazing ecosystem.
Starting along the banks of the Blackstone River just north of the Arctic Circle in Canada’s Yukon Territory, Eric traveled south along the Dempster, Klondike, Alcan, and Cassiar-Stewart highways to photograph some of the most amazing mountain scenery he had never seen. That was just the beginning. Next came the Canadian Rockies where Eric photographed Jasper and Banff National Park. From there he traveled to Glacier National Park in Montana and then to Yellowstone National Park, Wyo., finishing the entire Y2Y eco-region. He edited through several thousand images to come up with the images you see in this Y2Y gallery. These images tell the complete story of Y2Y through his experiences.
The Y2Y is not a conservation project for EZP, but rather an opportunity. For the viewers of this Web site and fans of Eric's work, the Alaska to Florida road trip presented an opportunity to shed some light on the conservation issues of a region that he was traveling through and photographing anyways. There are other photographers who have worked for several years on the Y2Y effort. Eric’s photography is but a brief yet personal view into the Y2Y region. To learn more about Y2Y, beyond what Eric’s images show, please visit the Web site www.y2y.net. It is a fantastic resource and the official authority on one of the most successful and ambitious conservation initiatives on earth.
