Abstracts and close-ups can be one in the same or they can be different. An abstract takes the literal and turns it into something completely different, symbolic even, and often leaves the subject open to interpretation. A close-up on the other hand is literal. A close-up combines the vision of the photographer and the equipment at hand – a telephoto or macro lens – to showchase a unique view of the world. Both abstracts and close-ups take a special eye on the part of the photographer because they are so hard to see. They can be an inch square or an entire mountainside. Moving objects, even if it’s the camera, create some of the best abstracts. Sometimes abstracts seem more like a painting than a photograph, or they take on a mystical quality. Close-ups can range from an attractive arrangement of wildflowers to a panorama of autumn leaves. This gallery is special because these images challenge the viewer’s mind as to what is real and what is not, and encourages us to look at our world in a different way.
