USF "Life on the Edge" Exhibit Opening

A week ago today, my Life on the Edge exhibit opened at the University of Sarasota. We had a wonderful two hours of more than 40 guests, most of whom I didn't know, who listened attentively and browsed images from Florida's Nature Coast while sipping delicious wine. My presentation, tailors specifically to the USF crowd, went off without a hitch. I held up a National Geographic article that showed the difference between Long Island, New York 400 years ago and today. My point was to show how mRead More...

Life on the Edge comes to USF in Sarasota, Florida

Tomorrow culminates months of collaboration between the University of South Florida at Sarasota-Manatee and my effort to bring Life on the Edge: The Story of Florida's Nature Coast to southwest Florida. The Sarasota community is a perfect location to showcase the growing trend of conservation photography, art, science, and environmental economics. No other county in Florida has more protected land, proportionate to its size, than Sarasota County. While at the same time, southwest Florida has Read More...

Saying Goodbye to Wes Skiles

Wes Skiles was a man filled to the brim with curiosity for the natural world and whose nerves were electrified with the passion to teach others about his discoveries and adventures. He specialized in underwater photography and video. He collaborated with a host of professionals in the magazine and film industries, lighting and sound specialists, producers, divers, and explorers to bring to all of us the world that we don’t know, the world we take for granted – water. Wes was Read More...

Otherworldly

John Moran, David Moynahan and I went to Keaton Beach on Saturday to get the "best damn scallop photograph in the world" as John puts it. It was John and David's mission actually. Without their vision, I would never have come home with images like these, images that look like they are of creatures from distant planets. I had no idea that scallops were so strange looking.

You can see that three of these images are close ups. The more distant image provides you with a view Read More...

Around the Bend

It's been a while since my canoe and paddle felt the tanic water of the cypress-lined Santa Fe. I listened to sounds more than I searched for photographs to make. The insects were buzzing their little heads off, especially the cicadas. The forest was a riot of sounds waving up and down in intensity. Birds were as much a part of the chorus as the insects (maybe because the birds eat the bugs). An occasional fish, turtle, or tree-trunk-scurrying squirrel added to the tapestry of nature's song.<Read More...

Nostalgia

I'm feeling nostalgic for the west, for those wide open spaces that by the mere fact the combined feeling of smallness and awe bring tears to the eyes. The sound of Pink Floyd blasting through the car speakers, windows down, wide open road ahead and mountains in the distance. I can't remember the pain of hiking to 10,000 feet, alone and afraid that because of my aloneness I had better not twist an ankle because then, then I would be totally screwed. Living on the edge and knowing without a shRead More...

Why Qivana – The Company

Qivana is a solid company, meaning they have a founding team with experience second to none and a product line that is second to none. I’ve written about Derrick Hall, Qivana’s CEO, on my Qivana web site blog. I am 100 percent confident in Derrick’s ability to lead this company toward a successful future because he has more than 40 years of leadership experience working for both the pharmaceutical industry and the natural products industry.

Who wants to be healthy? Everyone does, of course! But who is healthy? What does it mean to be healthy? Is health the absence of sickness? Maybe. For now. But remember, you’re not sick until your sick. So what if you are healthy now but you get cancer or Alzheimer's later? Are you really healthy now? Better said, are you as healthy as you can be right now?

My personal approach to health is if I wasn’t born with it, then I can cure it, yet I can contract any disease at aRead More...

In the June 5th blog post “Qivana – A Change of Direction Toward the Same Horizon” I announced that I have started a new business with a network marketing company called Qivana. With the next several posts, I discuss reasons why I have embarked down this new path.

Network marketing is the best way for the average person to become wealthy, developing an asset that will pay substantial residual income for the rest of a person’s life.
Success

The definitions of success are as varied as their are people on this planet. Success is like happiness, what makes one person feel successful is often different than what makes another feel successful. Furthermore, that definition can change during our lifetimes as we grow physically, emotionally and spiritually.

I can be very hard on myself regarding how I define my success as a photographer. I am my own worst critic. Being publishing in newspapers, magazines and books is not enouRead More...

The Saints

St. Joeseph Peninsula State Park and St. Vincent National Wildlife Refuge are two of the most stunning Florida landscapes I have ever seen. They both feature trackless, wild beaches that stretch on for miles. They both have beautiful dunes. St. Joe's are like small mountains of sand and St. Vincent's are serpentine waves bisected by pine forest. I actually photographed these places just before the BP Oil disaster. Now, soon, they will be lined with the black greed of mankind. Enjoy what you sRead More...

Light Up The Night

My good friend John Moran has inspired me to do more night photography, using long exposures and various artificial lights to illuminate the scene. Here are some quick example photographs from a recent camping trip to coastal Georgia.

Pure moon light reflects off the ocean and silhouettes my friends, one of whom is using a cell phone that lights up his face.

</pRead More...

Timing

Timing is everything in photography. Sometimes, having good timing comes totally by accident.

Consider the two recently photographed images from coastal Georgia. One image is somber, almost scary. It features a looming storm and foreboding horizon; the silhouetted snag appears like a trap waiting to be sprung. The ebb and flow of the waves pull you in, reluctantly. The other image is the exact opposite: A cloudless, sunny sky, gentle, undulating sand, long captivating shadows, and a sRead More...

It's a rare occasion that I get to photograph nature just for the hell of it, just because it's what I love to do. Not to try and save the world or make a buck, but for the challenge of making a great photograph and for exploring an unfamiliar place.

Just was the case as I rested my soul north of San Francisco in the heart of wine country for 48 glorious hours. With rolling green hills, gnarled moss-covered oaks, cliffs plummeting 1000 feet into the pacific, and giant redRead More...

NANPA Wrap-up

The NANPA Summit ended on a high note Friday evening with a stellar presentation by photographer Joel Sartore. Afterward, college students, committee members, and colleagues went out for dinner and drinks at a local pub. Always a great bonding experience when alcohol is involved. We stayed up late (again) but actually got a chance to unwind.

This year's students were amazing to work with.
